Why Our Kids Can’t Read and What You Can Do to Help Them

Last month we talked about the fact that 40% of Ohio’s third graders are not reading proficiently.

Sold A Story (Sold a Story: How Teaching Kids to Read Went So Wrong | Podcast (apmreports.org)) is a podcast that examines why reading teachers went so wrong.  It is an interesting listen and worth your valuable time. You learn a lot about reading methodologies and why our kids are struggling unnecessarily. It also provides hope for parents whose kids are different learners.  Our kids can learn to read, comprehend what they have read and spell!  They just need proper instruction in phonics.  Some popular phonics programs are Wilson Reading System® (Wilson Reading System - Wilson Language Training Corporation) and the Orton Gillingham Approach (Resources for Dyslexic Learners | Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (ortonacademy.org)

Reading programs like Wilson and Orton Gillingham are programs that you can ask your district to provide for your child if your child is struggling in reading.  Struggling with reading can lead to negative behaviors such as avoidance or disappearing during any reading related activity at school or home, resignation and acting out.  No one benefits from negative behavior, that is why we as parents must be detectives, find the function of the behavior and make sure the child’s cries for help are answered.

The reading crisis in this country has many layers, we must all do our part to fix it.
